Parliamentary elections 2024

Parliamentary elections are elections to the Icelandic legislative assembly called Alþingi, that has 63 members. Parliamentary elections are normally held every four years, unless parliament is dissolved before the end of the term. Something that recently happened.

We encourage everyone, with the right to vote in Iceland, to exercise that right.

The next parliamentary elections will be on November 30th, 2024.

Iceland is a democratic country and one with a very high voting rate.

Hopefully through providing people of foreign backgrounds more information about the elections and your right to vote, we enable you to participate in the democratic process here in Iceland.

Who can vote and where?

All Icelandic citizens over the age of 18 who have had a legal residence in Iceland have the right to vote. If you have lived abroad for longer than 8 years, you must apply separately for the right to vote.

You can check the election registry and look up where to vote with your ID number (kennitala).

Voting can take place before the election day, if a voter cannot vote at his/her place to vote. Information on absentee voting can be found here.

Voters can get assistance with the voting. Thei don´t have to give any reasons for why. A voter can bring their own assistant or obtain assistance from election staff. Read more about this here.

Everyone, with the right to vote in Iceland, is encouraged to exercise that right.

What are we voting?

The 63 representatives in the parliament are chosen from candidate lists, put forth by the political parties, according to the number of votes. Since 2003, the country has been divided into 6 constituencies.

Each political party announces their list of people you can vote for. Some have lists in all six constituencies, but not all parties always. Now for example, one of the parties only has a list for one of the constituencies.

The political parties

This time there are 11 parties that offer canditates to be voted for. We urge you to seek information about their policies. Hopefully you will find a list of candidates that best reflects your views and vision for the future of Iceland.

Here below we list all the 11 political parties and links to their websites.
