Invitation to a cancer screening

The Cancer Screening Coordination Centre encourages foreign women to participate in cancer screenings in Iceland. The participation of women with foreign citizenship in cancer screenings is very low.

A pilot project is now ongoing where women can come to special afternoon openings at selected health centres for screening for cervical cancer. Those women who have received an invitation (sent to Heilsuvera and island.is) can attend these sessions without having booked an appointment in advance.

Midwives take the samples and the cost is only 500 ISK.

The afternoon openings will happen on Thursdays between 15 and 17, during the period of 17th of October to 21st of November. If the afternoon openings turn out to be a success, they will continue to be offered and will also be expanded.

The afternoon openings will be available at the following centres:

Healthcare centre of Árbær

Healthcare centre of Efra-Breiðholt

Healthcare centre of Miðbær

Healthcare centre of Seltjarnarnes

Healthcare centre Sólvangur

The participation of women with foreign citizenship in cancer screenings is very low.

Only 27% undergo screening for cervical cancer and 18% undergo screening for breast cancer. In comparison, the participation of women with Icelandic citizenship is almost 72% (cervical cancer) and 64% (breast cancer).
